Wouldn’t it be cool if your drive was the best part of your day, everyday?  What if you could know you’re free and clear before you change lanes, or getting an adrenaline rush from taking an on-ramp?  What if the design of your seat made long trips enjoyable, and your customized radio station came along for  the ride?  It is now all possible with the new 2014 Nissan Altima, it will change the way you drive forever.  The 2014 Altima has deep creases and dramatic lines that started on a designers sketchpad.  Then, it took an innovative metal stamping process to bring them to life.  Building something average probably would have been easier, but on any average day, isn’t it nice to have something that takes your breath away?

The 2014 Nissan Altima sedan is available in seven trim  levels: 2.5, 2.5 S, 3.5 S, 2.5 SV, 3.5 SV, 2.5 SL and 3.5 SL. The number denotes  the selected engine (2.5-liter inline-4 or 3.5-liter V6).  The base 2.5 Altima sedan comes standard with 16-inch steel  wheels, full power accessories, keyless ignition/entry, a height-adjustable driver seat, Bluetooth phone and audio connectivity, and a four-speaker sound  system with a CD player.  The 2.5 S gets you automatic headlights, cruise control, a six-way power driver seat, more advanced functionality for the gauge-cluster LCD screen and a six-speaker sound system. The Sport Value package adds 16-inch alloy wheels, remote ignition and a trunk lid spoiler. The  Display Audio package tacks on a 5.0-inch touchscreen display, a rearview  camera, a USB port, satellite radio and smartphone app integration.  The V6-engined 3.5 S comes with all of those features (including  the Display Audio package) plus 18-inch alloy wheels and steering-wheel-mounted  paddle shifters.  Upgrading to the SV trim nets 17-inch alloy wheels (2.5),  dual-zone automatic climate control, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, the  contents of the Display Audio package and remote ignition. The Convenience  package (optional on 2.5 SV) adds a sunroof, foglamps, rear air-conditioning  vents and an auto-dimming rearview mirror.  The top-shelf Altima SL adds xenon headlights (3.5), LED  taillights, the sunroof (3.5), leather upholstery, an eight-way power driver  seat (with power lumbar adjustment), heated front seats, a heated steering  wheel and a nine-speaker premium Bose sound system with an auxiliary audio  jack. The Moonroof package adds a sunroof separately for the 2.5.  The Technology package for SV and SL models includes a 7-inch  touchscreen, voice controls, a navigation system and electronic safety features  such as blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alerts and a lane-departure warning system.  Turn brand new into all you.

Whether your on a cross the country road trip or the daily commute, sitting in a car for too long can be fatiguing.  To help you out, Nissan engineers looked to the cosmos where astronauts float weightlessly in zero-gravity conditions.  In the weightlessness of space, humans tend to take a relaxed posture that minimizes stress on the body.  To help this neutral posture when you’re behind the wheel, they have designed an articulated front seat that offers continuous support from the pelvis to the chest.  Also, seat cushions that flex in response to your unique pressure points.  Say hello to zero-gravity seats in the new 2014 Nissan Altima.  The result is a seat that is amazingly comfortable and helps reduce fatigue, no spacesuit required!  Altima’s available remote engine start system lets you warm up or down the cabin from up to 195 feet away!  Now, when you open the door, it’s as if it was expecting you.  With details like available Dual Zone Automatic Temperature control, and heated front seats and steering wheel, Altima’s interior will make you want to stay.  Just press the push button ignition and you are on your way!

Nissan Connect is smart technology that keeps your world within reach.  With Nissan Connect apps your Altima becomes your smartphones best friend.  It all works seamlessly together through Altima’s audio system.  It keeps getting better and better, the app alerts you with updates to the latest version and the basic app package is FREE for 3 years!  Imagine the choices you have with Pandora, iheartradio, slacker and more, all at your fingertips.  You are wired to the world with the Nissan Connect app.  Altima lets you safely keep track of Twitter, Facebook, and more.  Thanks to the navigation system and Nissan Connects compatibility with location based services including online search powered by Google, getting around has never been easier.  The display serves up information right in front of you helping to minimize time looking away.  Plus, the 3-D depth and tilt design helps you take it all in quicker.

What if your daily drive got an adrenaline boost?  Altimas V6 engine not only gives you incredible acceleration, but its Xtronic CVT features three modes for a more customized driving experience, including paddle shifters.   The 2014 Nissan Altima 2.5 sedan comes with a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine  that generates 182 horsepower and 180 pound-feet of torque. A CVT sends power to the front wheels.  Altima is one of the quickest four-cylinder family sedans. EPA-estimated fuel economy is 31 mpg combined (27 mpg city/38 mpg highway), an outstanding rating for a midsize sedan.  Altima 3.5 models have a 3.5-liter V6 good for 270 hp and  251 lb-ft of torque. The CVT is again standard. Fuel economy is strong for a V6 at 25 mpg combined (22  mpg city/31 mpg highway).  The 2014 Altima 2.5 wears the PUREDRIVE badge, meaning it meets or exceeds the industry average US federal CAFE standards for model-year 2016.  This initiative is just one aspect of Nissans commitment to developing more environmentally friendly transportation for all of us.

Wouldn’t it be cool if your car could put a smile on your face, confidence in your hands and goosebumps all over?  Check out the new 2014 Nissan Altima sedan and you will have a valid reason to keep bragging!

You might be surprised when you climb behind the wheel of a 2014 Grand Cherokee, Previous versions of the top Jeep took hits for their excessive fuel consumption and general lack of refinement, but the 2014 Grand Cherokee has a host of changes and  rebounded in recent years with significant improvements to ride quality, fuel  economy and interior accommodations. It’s one of top favorite midsize SUVs, and Jeep has made key updates for 2014 to address its few lingering faults.

The two biggest changes to the 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee are its eight-speed automatic transmission and a new, highly economical diesel V6.  With Grand Cherokees best-in-class fuel economy, your quest for excellence has been delivered.  It delivers you 30 MPG with the 3.0L V6 engine, fuel economy.  730-mile driving range, 420 LB-FT of torque, and 7400 LB of maximum towing.  30 MPG is no joke, so when you tell you friends your Grand Cherokee traveled 730 highway miles without refueling, you might have to tell them twice!  The all new 8-speed transmission glides with a smooth and quick efficiency, consistently using energy to its best advantage.  Although the current-generation Jeep Grand Cherokee is much  more comfortable and civilized in everyday driving than older versions, it hasn’t  lost any of its off-road prowess. Jeep gives you several four-wheel-drive  systems to choose from, and an optional off-road package provides an adjustable  air suspension that can change the ride height on the 2014 Grand Cherokee from  6.6 inches for easy entry in garages with low vertical clearance to 11.3 inches  for maximum ground clearance while on rough terrain.  Its construction provides additional gears with no gain in weight, enhanced acceleration with reduced fuel consumption.  It all adds up to a ride that delivers powerful strength without compromise.

The 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee is a five-passenger midsize SUV  that comes in five trim levels: Laredo, Limited, Overland, Summit and SRT. Each  is available with rear-drive (2WD) or four-wheel drive (4WD), except the  high-performance SRT model, which is 4WD only.  Laredo equipment includes 17-inch allow wheels, automatic headlights, cruise control, foglamps, keyless ignition/entry, Bluetooth and a six-speaker sound system with a  5-inch touchscreen, a CD player, a USB port and an auxiliary audio jack.  The Laredo’s optional Security and Convenience Group includes  a power liftgate, remote engine start, a 115-volt household-style power outlet,  heated front seats and a heated steering wheel. Also optional on the Laredo are  18-inch wheels, an eight-way power driver seat, satellite radio and Jeep’s new  8.4-inch touchscreen display with voice command.  Limited includes Laredo feautres, plus quadra-trac II with selec-terrain and hill descent control.  Headed steering wheel, leather trimmed seating, eight way passenger seat with a four way lumbar adjustment, heated front and back row seats, 18-inch aluminum wheels, audio system with 9 speakers and dual exhaust.

The designers looked to the natural hues found in some of the worlds most iconic landscapes.  There, they found inspiration that translates into stunning interiors crafted with materials and the most of the details.  Choose from four beautiful different types of interior.  The 2014 Grand Cherokee’s interior looks similar to last  year’s, but there are some useful upgrades. The dash now houses a standard  configurable 7-inch screen that can be used to display a wide range of  information. We also like the center-mounted 8.4-inch  touchscreen that’s standard in all Grand Cherokees, except the Laredo. It  features an easy-to-use interface and includes a WiFi hotspot and smartphone  app integration, including media apps from Pandora and iHeartRadio. It also  houses the navigation system if you select that option. Overall, the Grand  Cherokee has one of the nicest interiors in its class.

Of course, with every new car comes the stunning display of technology.  The new 2014 Grand Cherokee welcomes you to the alpine surround sound system.  This premium audio system utilizes a high powered.  Its masterfully simple, with the award winning Uconnect system, you will always be connected, informed, entertained and more productive.  The new suite of Uconnect features and services the next generation of in-vehicle connectivity.  Offers. 9-1-1 Call, roadside assistant call, stolen vehicle assistance, theft alarm notification, voice texting, WIFI hotspot, instant in-vehicle assistance, Uconnect access app, and connected search.  Navigation is the audible turn by turn directions, and detailed 3-D maps help to assure you arrive.

2013 Cadillac SRX Review

2013 Cadillac SRX

2013 Cadillac SRX

2013 Cadillac SRX

Community Auto Group Serving Mason City, Des Moines, Iowa City, Cedar Rapids, Maquoketa and Davenport

The Cadillac SRX is aimed at the midsize premium crossover segment’s undisputed sales champ, the Lexus RX, the SRX rides on a modified version of the company’s Theta front-drive architecture. While all-wheel-drive is optional, our tester featured standard sun belt-ready front-wheel-drive.  This latest SRX was introduced for the 2010 model year initially with a 3.0-liter V6 and, later, with a short-lived 2.8-liter turbocharged V6. The naturally aspirated V6 was a bit of a dog, and while the turbo really breathed life into the SRX, it was expensive and complicated to produce.  The SRX you see here shares virtually nothing with Cadillac’s first try at a crossover. That funky-looking rear-driver was a blast to drive, but it didn’t quite serve up what consumers wanted.

The big news is the arrival of the LFX codenamed 3.6-liter V6 for 2012. The engine is a revised-for-2012 version of the 3.6-liter GM has used in a number of its larger cars, ranging from the Chevrolet Camaro to the Buick LaCrosse.  In its latest incarnation, the V6 features a lightweight cylinder head and exhaust manifold as well as E85 capability for farmers’ intent on shoving corn into their fuel tanks.  Otherwise, SRX mostly stands pat for the new-year, although a heated steering wheel is a new option and the power door lock switch was smartly moved to the door panels instead of the center stack.

Cadillac’s most expressive “art and science” design yet, the SRX is still a striking crossover today. Viewed from the side, its proportions are awkward given its long snout and almost ludicrously low approach angle – any semblance of off-road ability crossovers once had has been thrown out the window.  But we like the hunched rear end, which gives the SRX an almost armadillo-like look that is much more interesting than the blandly styled RX.  The SRX also delights in its attention to detail. Its vertical tail lamps are actually small fins, a nostalgic touch that adds intrigue without going overboard.  The Cadillac SRX has a chromed out grille, which comfortably straddles the line between glam and bling. The front fender-mounted chrome strake, however, is one tacky element we could easily do without. If there’s a car out there that looks good with a hunk of chromed plastic tacked to its fender, we haven’t found it.

When we first sampled the SRX a few years ago, it was its interior that impressed us the most. Essentially an upsized version of the design seen in the company’s CTS, the SRX’s inner trappings are as pleasant to interact with as they are to touch. The driver settles into a firm seat covered in high-grade leather. Better bolstered than the SRX’s front-drive pretensions might indicate, the driver’s seat features an adjustable under-knee support for long-distance comfort. Cadillac’s three-spoke steering wheel features easy-to-use controls and the heating element was a nice added touch. Three gauge pods feature well-lit dials; with the available navigation, the center screen is a full-function color display capable of showing both navigation guides and trip computer functions. Especially nifty was a screen that displayed the speed of the road you’re traveling on; only once or twice did we find this to be inaccurate.  Moving to the center stack, you’ll find an LCD screen that rises to the occasion with the touch of a button, as well as a myriad of buttons for audio and climate controls.

SRX’s V6 is rated at 308 horsepower at 6,800 rpm and 265 lb-ft. of torque at just 2,400 rpm. Sending the power to the front wheels, in the case of our tester, is GM’s 6T70 six-speed automatic, the same unit the outgoing 3.0-liter used.  The button next to the gear lever lets wimpy drivers select an Eco mode that essentially makes drivers push the gas pedal harder to get anywhere.  With Eco mode safely disengaged, the SRX is a robust performer. The V6 might develop a decent amount of low-end torque, but this V6 doesn’t mind revving all the way to redline. Acceleration is strong throughout the range, but we were especially impressed with the smooth nature of the powertrain at immediate tip-in, which gives the SRX a truly premium feel. Any reminder of the outgoing 3.0-liter was erased as soon as we found the readily accessible power that didn’t require constant downshifting of what has proven to be a silky smooth transmission when hooked up to the right engine.  Cadillac and the EPA agree that the SRX should achieve 17 mpg in the city and 24 mpg on the highway with front-wheel-drive (AWD saps 1 mpg either way), and that’s about what we saw. We tickled 24 mpg on an extended highway drive, but never saw below 17 mpg around town. For the record, this V6 is formulated to run on regular fuel, something that can’t be said for all of its rivals.

In conclusion, the Cadillac SRX is sleek, beautiful and fast and a wonderful addition to the family.

2013 Cadillac XTS Review

2013 Cadillac XTS2013 Cadillac XTS

Mason City, Des Moines, Waverly, IA

The 2013 Cadillac XTS is built on the long-wheelbase version of GM’s Epsilon platform and featuring a direct-injected 304-horsepower 3.6-liter V6 driving the front or all wheels through a six-speed automatic transmission, the XTS slots above the CTS in the Cadillac lineup. The 2013 Cadillac XTS’ tTen inches longer than the CTS, only fractionally wider, and surprisingly on a wheelbase about two inches shorter, the 2013 Cadillac XTS has considerably more interior and trunk volume than the CTS — enough to move it into the EPA “large car” category.

Striking styling makes it instantly recognizable, and inside is the debut of Cadillac’s CUE (Cadillac User Experience) state-of-the-art control and infotainment system. Standard magnetic ride control gives all trim levels a ride quality and handling that compare well to any luxury car from anywhere in the world, and further emphasizes the difference from your late great-uncle’s DeVille. All of the safety equipment expected in a top-line car today is there, including adaptive cruise control and rear cross-traffic alert — and the debut of the Safety Alert Seat, which gently vibrates to alert the driver of a potential hazard.

The standard XTS provides the base for the ever-fancier “collections” (a new word for trim levels) of Luxury, Premium, and Platinum. My test car for the past week was a Premium model with a lovely “Crystal Red Tintcoat” paint scheme its only option. Options not required — everything needed for comfort, safety, and performance was included.

I was a bit skeptical at first, but grew to like the CUE interface. Ditto on the driving experience — when trolling through traffic or sedately driving on the highway, it was as comfortable and quiet as expected, but felt a bit soft. Not “Grandma’s Fleetwood” soft, mind you, just not quite as focused as a good German competitor. I wicked it up a bit when I came to a favorite twisty road — not a good thing at all in the old Fleetwood — and the XTS came right into focus, sharply. Target, Ingolstadt? Could be…

APPEARANCE: Looks can be deceptive. When I first examined the XTS, it didn’t look very big. And, compared to a DeVille or Fleetwood, it isn’t — which makes it much more maneuverable in tight parking and on the road. Exterior styling is an interesting combination of angular sides and accents and an aerodynamically flowing profile, with a raked front, short hood, long, near-fastback greenhouse, and short rear deck. Close attention to detail shows how far Cadillac has come — where once door trim didn’t quite ever line up, here it’s as precise as on any German rival, and the trim pieces at the front and rear of the side windows are one-piece, more expensive to produce but much better looking and appropriate. Familiar Cadillac styling themes include the bold eggcrate grille, in chrome of course, vertical headlights (HID with LED running lights) and taillights (LED), and copious use of chrome trim, even around the headlights and front fog lamps, not to mention the door handles. The rear center stop light (CHMSL) is cleverly dual-purposed as a spoiler, and a close look at the taillights shows… vestigial tail fins? Yes!

COMFORT: The XTS’s interior doesn’t violate any laws of physics. Cadillac’s designers merely got the maximum amount of interior into a modestly-sized exterior package. As for the outside, interior style is tastefully extroverted, not flashy, with premium materials and excellent fit and finish. At Luxury level and above, both front seats and the outboard rear positions are heated, with the fronts also cooled, and the full steering wheel rim is heated. Comfort level is high, even in the rear. Cadillac would like to make inroads to the livery trade (limo service), where rear comfort and space are paramount, and if not to stretch-limo standards, there is a remarkable amount of leg and head room in the rear. Not to mention 18 cubic feet of trunk space. Four some and clubs? No problem!

All that’s expected in a contemporary luxury sedan is included — power everything, pushbutton start/stop, a high-quality audio system with all formats, even SD card and internet streaming radio via Bluetooth®, LED lighting, and far too much more to list. The centerpiece of the XTS’s interior is the dashboard. Think glass cockpit, as in aircraft. CUE it up…both the main instrument display and center stack interface are configurable screens, controlled via buttons on the steering wheel and/or proximity- and touch-sensitive areas on the stack and stack screen. Stack controls give audible and tactile feedback in the form of a light click, much like the newest smartphones and tablets. Unlike so many of those, the XTS interface is mostly simple and self-explanatory. Cadillac had some of the earliest head-up displays, nearly twenty years ago, and then abandoned them. Head-up is back and better than ever, bright, user-configurable and non-distracting.

SAFETY: All of the expected airbags and harnesses and other passive safety features are standard in all XTS models. Premium and Platinum collections have the Driver Awareness Package standard, with lane departure warning, forward collision alert, side blind zone alert, and rear cross-traffic alert — and the most interesting Safety Alert Seat, which vibrates the appropriate side bolster of the driver’s seat when a potential hazard is detected. Need to stop, quickly? The front brakes are Brembos, as used in the CTS-V. They work.

RIDE AND HANDLING: A rigid uni-body structure with strategic use of ultra-high strength steel ensures excellent road manners as well as safety. Also credit Cadillac’s use of Magnetic Ride Control magneto-rheological real-time controlled damping. New to Italian exotics, this was first used by Cadillac almost two decades ago, and has undergone continual refinement. It uses computer-controlled magnetic fields to vary the viscosity of the fluid in the shock dampers to effortlessly combine comfort and control. Driven gently, the XTS seems a bit soft and unfocused. Driven more assertively, it comes into focus and becomes a true driver’s car. This is also good for non-sport oriented drivers as it means better control when evading a possible accident — and an accident you don’t have is always better than one not avoided. The Haldex-based all-wheel drive system is transparent in operation and ensures that the power gets to the wheels that can use it in all conditions, wet or dry.

PERFORMANCE: With its 304 horsepower and 264 lb-ft of torque developed at rather high revolutions — 6800 and 5200 rpm, respectively — the XTS’s 3.6-liter V6 would seem, on paper, to need hard use in order to extract useful power. On paper… In the real world, think “reserve” or, in audiophile parlance, “overhead”. Direct fuel injection and continuously-variable cam phasing are among the engine technologies that enable it to produce plenty of motivation at everyday, real-world speeds — and to do that on unleaded regular. The six-speed automatic transmission shifts smoothly and quickly in D. It’s programmed to enhance fuel economy, so it chooses higher gears and keeps the revs low most of the time. This can diminish performance on a steep grade, but in that or a similar situation just shift the lever into manual and use the paddles behind the steering wheel spokes. The engine likes to rev — but horsepower equals air plus fuel and too much fun will make for a thirsty engine. It’s worth it. EPA estimates are 17 mpg city, 26 highway. I saw 15 to 17 around town and on backroads, with a little highway driving upping that to 18. More highway would have meant better mileage but this is a car that is happy to take the scenic route.

CONCLUSIONS: The new 2013 Cadillac XTS balances space, style, comfort, and technology to create a fine contemporary luxury sedan.
